Psychology

Why study Psychology?

Psychology is available as a Key Stage 4 option subject.

By taking psychology you will develop an ability to better understand the reasons behind human behaviour, memory and our actions. You will be able to debate different psychological explanations for various phenomena and analyse studies, alongside theories to make judgements about the suitability of research. This will also build on knowledge of creating scientific research, data handling skills, ethical understanding and evaluative reasoning so that you are able to better interpret the world around you.

Thinking like a psychologist involves not only important analytical skills, it also allows you to communicate effectively and confidently with others, allowing for deeper empathy of others within our society. It will enable you make reasoned arguments and judgements for human behaviour and apply knowledge to current events and issues.

Psychology is a challenging subject because it deals with the study of mental processes, genetics, and behaviour at the same time. It can be applied to situations in our everyday lives as well as every event in human history. Human behaviour is the basis for civilisation as we know it, and understanding what drives us to behave in the way we do, can help you to make sense of the world and become better at communicating with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Those who study psychology are given the tools to become more sensitive, rounded individuals, which benefits not only themselves, but the society in which they live.
